Los Angeles Pro-democracy Activists and Tibetan Immigrants Establish Chinese-Tibetan Friendship Society

[VOA, October 28, 2009 Rong Yi reporting] The Chinese-Tibetan Friendship Society was initially ounded by the Chinese democratic activist Wei Jingsheng. On October 27, the "Chinese-Tibetan Friendship Society" Southern California Chapter was established in Los Angeles. The organization aims to improve understanding among Han Chinese and Tibetan people and promote the peaceful settlement of ethnic conflicts in the future.

Protesting that the Chinese government recently executed four Tibetans, the Tibet Association of the US West Coast in Los Angeles and several other Tibetans groups demonstrated in front of the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles on October 26, a day before they formed the "Chinese-Tibetan Friendship Society, Southern California Chapter" with the local Chinese pro-democracy activists.

Protest against the execution of four Tibetans who participated in last year's 3.14 demonstration in Tibet

A Tibetan monk said: "Our local people called us from Lhasa. The Communist government executed a total of four individuals, the news did indeed have names." However, the Chinese embassy in London confirmed that only two people were executed.

Nobel Peace Prize nominee Wei Jingsheng and other Chinese democracy activists also participated in the demonstration. Wei Jingsheng said: "No matter which ethnic groups are persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party, we should support each other. The Communist Party's execution against the four Tibetans is absolutely an unjustified violence. It is clear that the March 14 event last year was a political protest. We heard a lot of stories illustrating the manipulation by the Communist Party who created the riot. In this case, it was an expression, at the most, overreaching the restriction. I think that execution by fire-squad is itself an atrocity. "

Refute China's official propaganda which twists facts about Tibet

The day after the demonstration, some forty Tibetan and Chinese pro-democracy activists formed the "Chinese-Tibetan Friendship Society" in Los Angeles. The former Security Minister of the Tibet Government-in-Exile, Pema C. Khangtetsang, pointed out: "to establish friendship with the Chinese people is very important, because the Chinese government has created a lot of distorted stories, claiming Tibetans are behind the violence, and were the barbaric dark force. I hope you can help us to clear our name. "

Tenzing Choden, a parliamentary member of the Tibetan government-in-exile, said that they did not advocate Tibetan independence. He said: "We only requested the fundamental rights of a high degree of autonomy. As long as the Chinese Communists implement the provisions in their Constitution, we have no additional requirements."

Chinese Social Democratic Party Secretary-General Liu Yin-Quan also joined in the Society. Liu said: "With the attitude of equality and mutual respect, the conflicts and problems in the two ethic groups can be resolved through friendship and cooperation. I am supporting this idea of Dalai Lama, and that is why I would like to participate in the "Chinese-Tibetan Friendship Society".

Wei Jingsheng: only China's democratization can provide the peaceful settlement of ethnic problems

Wei Jingsheng has repeatedly stated in public that he does not support the independence of Tibet. He said that the Chinese-Tibetan Friendship Society was the result of his talks with the Dalai Lama more than ten years ago. It was founded in San Francisco and later chapters were established in New York, Washington DC, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands and other places. He said the establishment of the organization is to provide a platform for cooperation. In addition to participation in each other's actions, it organizes cultural activities to enhance each other's feelings and understanding. Wei said that only after China's democratization, can there be the environment for negotiations to resolve ethnic issues.

Wei said: "The Dalai Lama believes that Chinese-Tibetan friendship and cooperation have a deeper meaning. We are now working together against the Communist oppression. Though important, more so is to promote the two nationalities to understand each other. Because the Chinese Communist Party is bound to collapse, ethnic questions must be solved thereafter. We have to resolve these problems; we need a peaceful negotiation process."

The Tibetan government-in-exile's website has recently published the Tibetans persecuted, killed, disappeared, and detained with the number of sentences: up to more than 1,200 people.

China's official Xinhua News Agency released English news and the Tibet Daily reported that the Lhasa Intermediate People's Court announced that Lobsang Gyaltsen (28 years old) and Loyak (30) were sentenced to death, while Kangtsuk (22) and Tenzin Phuntsok were sentenced to death sentences with deprive. Dawa Sangbu was sentenced to life imprisonment. The report pointed out that the five individuals were involved in three incidents of arson in Lhasa. The fire incidents caused a total of seven people killed and five shops burned. Official Chinese media reports did not mention if anyone was killed or injured or missing during the armed police suppressions.
